Dental crowns are designed to look just like your real teeth; they cover a damaged tooth to restore its function and improve its appearance. If you have a broken tooth above the gum line, Dr. Clare Macaulay may recommend a dental crown to restore your tooth.
The Crown Procedure
This procedure is usually performed in two or three visits to our office. On the first visit, we will need to prepare your tooth for the crown by taking x-rays and ensuring that there is enough tooth and bone structure to support the dental crown. If the tooth is decayed into the pulp, you may need a root canal before the crown can be placed.
The crown placement procedure is performed under local anesthesia to numb the tooth and gums and the tooth will be prepared to accommodate for the crown material. After it has been reshaped, Dr. Macaulay will take an impression of the tooth to create a custom crown. The manufacturing process can take up to three weeks so you will need to wear a temporary crown during the interim.
On your second visit, Dr. Macaulay will check the health of the gum tissues and either cement the crown on that visit, or take another impression to make the permanent crown. After placement, she will check the bite and make adjustments.
If you have a broken tooth and think you may need a crown, do not wait to seek treatment. Schedule your consultation in Valencia, CA with Dr. Macaulay today!
